What’s Inspring Me: My Father

Uncategorized

Father’s Day is just around the corner. So even though it’s supposed to be all about my Dad on Sunday, I can’t help but think about how he’s influenced me. I absolutely get my creative intuitions from my Mom, but as I’ve mentioned time and time again on this blog, having your own creative business is not just about being talented; you need to be a go-getter. People are born with certain gifts, but drive is something you learn by example. And my dad showed me that hard work is truly its own reward.Though his genes may not have contributed to my design talents, one of my earliest memories of being an artist is from him. I used to go into his walk-in closet and steal the cardboard sheets inside his newly dry-cleaned work shirts. I’d use them as makeshift canvases, drawing on them with my crayons + finding such joy in the purity of it. I vividly remember the excitement of the dry cleaning getting delivered, knowing a new batch of art supplies had just arrived. So today I thank my pop for pushing me all those years to be the best version of myself (and continuing to do so, though thankfully I don’t need his verbal kicks-in-the-butt as frequently).

Without it, I wouldn’t be prepared for this incredibly exciting, terrifying, rewarding, exhausting & life-changing phase of my life.

Thank you for this wonderful post Sandy. It was so beautiful and offered me a way to remember and celebrate my own father. It also jogged a memory from long ago…I too used to take the cardboard inserts from his laundered shirts and draw on them, cut them up and construct little houses and furniture with lots of scotch tape! Thank you…it was a lovely thing to be reminded of!Hugs,Mary
